UC Davis assistant Tyler Raber is a step closer to returning to the U.S. Open. Raber, who competed in the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont, was medalist in an 18-hoe local qualifier held Monday at Peach Tree Golf and Country Club in Marysville with a score of 4-under 68.y
Joining Raber among those advancing were Shintaro Ban and Ethan Davidson, who each came in at 69. In 2016, Ban won both the NCGA Amateur and California Amateur and had a shot at the California Slam but he failed to win the SCGA Amateur. Only two players have ever won all three events in the same year (George Von Elm and Charles Seaver).
The final two automatic spots went to Donnie Baucom and Andrew Bonner after a seven-for-two playoff consisting of players who finished at 70.
This year’s U.S. Open will tee off June 17-20 at Torrey Pines.
