Matt McCarty took a step closer to competing in this year’s U.S. Open. McCarty, a sophomore at Santa Clara, earned medalist honors in a local qualifier, posting a score of 9-under 63 Monday at Ruby Hill GC. McCarty was flawless, going bogey-free with seven birdies and an eagle.
Others advancing thru the local qualifier were James Song (65), Gregor Main (67), Alex Chin (67) and Derek Ackerman (67). Chin was the NCGA Player of the Year in 2020. Hayden Shieh, who also came in at 67, is the first alternate.
This year’s U.S. Open will tee off June 17-20 at Torrey Pines.
