Virginia Country Club of Long Beach took home the title after squeaking past Granite Bay Golf Club.
The Virginia CC team finished Friday’s finals at par-71 Poppy Hills GC with a score of 32. Granite Bay GC, which had been the early leader, came in at 31. Virginia CC was made up of teammates Michael Derk, Bronson Wright, Nicholas Bulseco, Cass Traub, Mark Manwaring, Torrey Edwards and captain Brett Lederer.
It’s the first Scratch League crown for Virginia CC in only their second season of competing.
“We’ve got a good mix of guys,” Lederer said. “We all do the practice rounds together and stay together. Plus, the guys want to win. It’s cool to end up coming out on top.”
Third place went to Bear Creek GC at 27. Cameron Park CC was fourth at 22.
The league uses a format where every hole is worth 16 points–7 to the winner, 5 to second, 3 to third and 1 for fourth. Each player then competes against the other three players in the foursome. If all the players tie on a specific hole, each player receives four points.
