The inaugural NCGA Senior Series Championship took place Tuesday at Poppy Ridge GC, crowning the first season-long champions of the series. In the Senior division (players 55 to 64-years-old), Kienhung Chen of Palo Alto (pictured, above) won, while in the Super Senior division (players 65 and older) Ron Villa of San Jose (pictured, below) was victorious.
Chen, who was sixth place on the points list among seniors going into the day, fired a 7-under net 65 to overtake regular season points leader Dave Reinoehl, finishing with 1,555 points compared to Reinoehl’s 1,288 points. Chen, who had two net eagles and six net birdies on the day, was challenged by John Schierman of Walnut Creek at 5-under-par and David Whelan of Mountain View at 1-under-par, who finished second and third respectively on the day.
Villa, who came into the day as the leader on the points list among super seniors, stayed there at day’s end with a solid third place finish, posting a 3-under net 69. Making things interesting for Villa was the solid play of Richard Jones and Guy Buechler, who shot net rounds of 8-under-par and 5-under-par to finish first and second, respectively. Jones, who was the final super senior to qualify, did his part in trying to claim the top spot with a net 64, but didn’t get the help he needed from the players at the top of the points list faltering. Buechler, who started the day fourth on the points list among super senior players, didn’t quite accrue enough points to overtake Villa with his runner-up finish of net 67. In the end, Villa finished with 1,667 points compared to Buechler’s 1,620. Final Points Standings
