Hanna-Wehrman Cup Singles
The NCPGA may be starting to turn the tide. The NCPGA made it two wins in the last three years, winning the Hanna-Wehrman Cup, 11-9, on a sunny Tuesday at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course.
In Tuesday’s Singles matches, the NCPGA won, 5.5-4.5. The big difference was three matches in the middle: Winning for the NCPGA were Pat Steffes (1-up), Steve Hummel (3 and 2) and Jason Schmuhl (2-up).
“This one feels good. It always feels good to win,” said NCPGA captain Paul Wilcox. “They were good matches.”
The NCPGA had four new players on its roster this year. The NCGA got wins from Jerry Ledzinski (6 and 5), Travis Peterson (3 and 1), Brett Viboch (3 and 1) and Danny Paniccia (5 and 4).
Despite the loss, the NCGA has won the Hanna-Werhman Cup 11 of the last 13 years. The NCGA leads in the overall Hanna-Wehrman Cup series, 24-19-10.
Staedler-Jetter Cup Singles
The NCGA made it two in a row, rolling to a 16.5-11.5 victory. Following early victories by Tony Padilla (2 and 1) and Mike Rowley (5 and 4), the NCGA went on a tear, winning six straight matches to seal the deal.
The other winners for the NCGA were Ron Johnson (3 and 2), Frank Pieper (3 and 2), Corey West (3 and 2), Mark Morgan (3 and 1), Jeff Burda (1-up) and Chuck Richesin (4 and 3). Also notching a late win was Casey Boyns (5 and 4).
“It’s a nice win for us,” said NCGA captain Michael Weeks. “It was a great bunch of guys with great camaraderie. It was an honor to be their captain.”
The NCPGA got wins from John Grund (2 and 1), Steve Pellegrine (3 and 2) and Shawn McEntee (3 and 2).
The NCPGA has won the Staedler-Jetter Cup six of the last eight years.The NCGA leads in the overall Staedler-Jetter Cup series, 16-10-3.

Afternoon Four-Ball Matches
Hanna-Wehrman Cup Four-Ball (NCPGA leads, 5.5-4.5 after day one)
The NCPGA took a slight lead as the two teams head into Tuesday’s Singles matches. The NCPGA jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead thanks to a 6 and 5 victory by Steve Hummel and Jason Schmuhl, but the NCGA came back later with a 3 and 2 win by Ian Dahl and Danny Paniccia to even things back up at 3.5 (total points).
Later, the NCPGA got two more wins–one from the tandem of Lance Johnson and Joe Dolby (3 and 2) and another from the team of Pat Steffes and Tim Sands (3 and 2). The NCGA kept itself within easy striking distance thanks to a 3 and 2 win from the team of Matt Cohn and Nick Moore.

Staedler-Jetter Cup Four-Ball (7.5-6.5 NCPGA leads after day one)
An afternoon comeback in Four-Ball kept the NCGA hopes more than alive.
The NCPGA came out with a quick 3 and 2 win from Mike Cook and Laird Small, but the NCGA finally got going with three straight wins from Tony Padilla and Scott Anderson (1-up), Jim Camaione and Jim Knoll (5 and 4) and Frank Pieper and Ron Johnson. The wins cut the NCPGA’s lead to 6.5-4.5 at the time.
Later, the NCGA made it 6.5-5.5 when Casey Boyns and Jeff Britton secured a 4 and 2 win over Steve Pelli\egrine and Tim Huber. The NCPGA did respond with a 1-up win from Scott Hoyt and Jim Hosley to make it 7.5-5.5. As darkness neared, Mark Morgan and Mike Rowley put up a big 1-up win for the NCGA to make things close.

Morning Chapman Matches
Hanna-Wehrman Cup (2.5-2.5 tied)
The NCGA and NCPGA left the morning Chapman matches locked in a tie at 2.5 points apiece. Winning a match for the NCPGA was the duo of Joe Dolby and Lance Johnson (6 and 4). Getting a point with a win for the NCGA was the team of Jason Melvin and Jerry Ledzinski (2 and 1). Each of the three other matches ended as ties (worth half a point).
Staedler-Jetter Cup (5.5-1.5, NCPGA leads)
The NCPGA grabbed an early lead and kept piling on from there. The morning matches ended with the NCPGA holding a commanding 5.5-1.5 lead. They’d go up 4-0 after wins from the tandems of Mike Cook and Laird Small (3 and 2), Dave DeLong and Chris Borrego (4 and 3), Shawn McEntee and John Grund (2-up) and Dana Jetter and Shawn Kelly (2-up).
The NCGA cut into the gap with a halve from Casey Boyns and Jeff Britton and a win from the team of Frank Pieper and Ron Johnson (2-up), but the NCPGA closed the action with a crucial 1-up win by Scott Hoyt and Jim Hosely over the tandem of Jeff Burda and Chuck Richesin.
The Hanna-Wehrman Cup features 10 amateur players representing the NCGA (top players from the previous season’s points list) taking on 10 professional players representing the Northern California PGA in a Ryder Cup-like format. The Staedler-Jetter Cup features 14 amateur players ages 55-over (10 Seniors and four Super Seniors) representing the NCGA (top players from the previous season’s points list) taking on 14 professional players ages 55-over representing the Northern California PGA in a Ryder Cup-like format.
Format: The first day of play in both the Hanna-Wehrman Cup and Staedler-Jetter Cup consists of two rounds—one round of four-ball match play (better ball) and one round of foursome match play (alternate shot). The second day of play’s final rounds consist of singles match play.
