Mrs. Rogers’ Neighborhood: NCGA President Gail Rogers at The PURE
First round co-leader Joey Sindelar called it “a spectacular day.” NCGA President Gail Rogers agreed.
Rogers, the first female NCGA president, got in her first round at this weekend’s PGA Tour Champions PURE Insurance Championship Impacting The First Tee with a pair of fellow Nor Cal’ers. Her amateur partner, Mike Branco, is a Youth on Course donor. Their The First Tee junior, meanwhile, was Jasmin Krishna of Pleasanton.
How’d the day go? Sindelar finished the day tied for first after a solid 5-under 67 at Pebble Beach Golf Links, while Krishna and Sindelar finished T-8 at 64 in the Pro-Junior. In the Pro-Am, meanwhile, Rogers and Branco are in the chase for the cut after opening with a 12-under 60.
Rogers’ big highlight came on the historic par-3 17th, where she made a natural birdie after knocking her tee shot to within 10 feet of the flagstick. Moments earlier, Sindelar had drained a long birdie putt. Helping Rogers on the bag as caddie was NCGA COO Ryan Gregg.
“Ryan’s always positive,” Rogers said afterwards. “It didn’t feel like a great round until that birdie on No. 17. The 2-for-1 was exciting.”
Sindelar was impressed with Rogers’ performance.
“Gail’s a wonderful lady. I’m happy to know her. You can tell she loves golf,” Sindelar said. “Her 2-for-1 on 17 was spectacular. We had a spectacular day.”
As per the NCGA itself, Sindelar, who hails from central New York, had nothing but praise.
“The NCGA is legendary to the people in the East,” Sindelar said. “Every year I come, I walk the Hall at Poppy Hills. Those people on the wall are big-time golf peeps.”
