Stanford Golf Course Celebrates Re-Opening

Stanford University officials, golf administrators and local dignitaries recently celebrated the re-opening of Stanford Golf Course.
The renovations, performed by designer Beau Welling of Beau Welling Design, focused on among other things reduction of overall water consumption, a reconstruction of all bunkers, a redesign and installation of the irrigation system, improved playability and a return to the original aesthetics of architects George C. Thomas and William Bell’s original design. Opened in 1930, the course underwent a previous renovation in 2008 by John Harbottle.
Home to the nationally ranked men’s and women’s Cardinal golf programs, the course has a rich tradition and history. World Golf Hall of Famers Tom Watson and Mickey Wright honed their games there, as did future Hall of Famer Tiger Woods and 2015 NCGA Amateur Match Play champion and now professional Maverick McNealy. The course was also home to former USGA Presidents Sandy Tatum, Grant Spaeth and Walter Driver.
Each year, the course hosts The Goodwin, a top men’s collegiate tournament and two women’s events; the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Professor Condoleezza Rice and the Peg Barnard Invitational.
