Rocklin resident Lynne Cowan (pictured, far left) did it again.
Cowan, playing out of Sierra View CC, shot her second straight round of 4-over 76 to come in at 8-over 152, defeating runner-up Karen Garcia to win the NCGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. The win marked Cowan’s record fourth career NCGA Senior crown. Entering the championship, she’d been tied with Pat Cornett at three for the most victories.
“I had no expectations,” said Cowan, who’s also a two-time winner of the Women’s Championship (2006-’07). “I just tried to do my best.”
Cowan made a move early, carding birdies on No.2 and No.3. On the par-4 3rd, she’d knock a 9-iron from the fairway bunker to within a foot of the flagstick. She’d tack on another birdie at No.6 to offset two bogeys and a double. After making the turn, she’d go a steady 3-over par.
Garcia, winner of the 2015 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, came in at 154 after a 79. The Cool resident fell back with a front-nine 39 and never got into a rhythm. Third place went to Cornett at 158 following a 76.
The win comes six weeks to the day that Cowan became a first-time grandmother (her grandson is William Charles Lang). “He’s been an exciting addition to the family,” Cowan said.

A former USGA champion is on top of the leaderboard at the annual NCGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
Cool resident Karen Garcia, who won the 2015 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, took the first round lead Monday at par-72 Poppy Hills Golf Course with a score of 3-over 75. Garcia would card four birdies to go against four bogeys and a triple-bogey (par-4 16th).
The 7th hole, which normally plays as a par-4, is playing as a par-5 for the championship.
In second place at 76 is Sierra View CC member Lynne Cowan. Cowan has won the event a co-record three times, along with Pat Cornett.
Cornett is in fourth place at 82. Christy Atencio of Arrowcreek GC is third at 79.
The Senior Women’s championship is for players aged 50 and over. Cowan holds the Senior Women’s 36-hole scoring record with a 144 in 2016. Pat Cornett and Lynne Cowan hold the Senior record with three wins.
