LPGA Tour Returns to San Francisco For 2018 LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship
We knew the LPGA Tour was returning to the Bay Area. Now, we also know the name of the event.
Officials announced Monday that MEDIHEAL, a Korean based cosmetics company, will sponsor the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, this April 23-29. The official LPGA tournament will feature a field of 144 of the world’s best female golfers in a four-day stroke-play event. Players will compete for a $1.5 million purse.
As a proud supporter of women’s golf, MEDIHEAL will use the global spotlight of the LPGA Tour to provide exposure to the MEDIHEAL brand and to help inspire growth of women’s golf around the world. MEDIHEAL has previously partnered with the LPGA through sponsoring top LPGA Tour player, So Yeon Ryu. The LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship will be the company’s first event sponsorship.
“We are excited to be hosting our championship, in partnership with the LPGA Tour, in the Bay Area,” said Oh-sub Kwon, Chairman and CEO of MEDIHEAL. “In recent years we have made major investments into women’s golf and will look to build upon that here at the beautiful Lake Merced Golf Club. The LPGA Tour has been on such an upward trend in recent years and we are proud to associate our company with them.”
Built in 1922 on what was once coastal sand dunes, the golf course at Lake Merced Golf Club has undergone renovations by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, architect of Augusta National, and Rees Jones, the praised “U.S. Open Doctor” and designer of Poppy Ridge GC in Livermore. The Club has played host to numerous championship events, including U.S. Open Qualifiers, an NCAA West Regional Championship, a U.S. Boys’ Junior Championship, a U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, and, most recently, LPGA Tour events from 2014-2016.
“We are delighted that the best women golfers in the world will return to Lake Merced Golf Club and the Bay Area for the 2018 LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship” said Jeff Pero, President of Lake Merced Golf Club. “We are excited by our new partnership with MEDIHEAL and the LPGA and look forward to working with them in the years ahead.”
