Gilroy GC took the title at the annual NCGA South Bay Zone Championship.
Gilroy GC shot a final round 7-under 133 at Carmel Valley Ranch to come in at 20-under 262, defeating co-runners-up Saratoga CC and San Jose CC by a shot. The Gilroy GC squad, made up of teammates Ron Fellows, Julian Carrasco, Armando Palomo and Francisco Reyes, carded four eagles and four birdies to go against just two bogeys playing in a format that takes the two best net scores from a four-man team.
In a playoff for second place, San Jose CC defeated Saratoga CC. San Jose CC had a final round 132, while Saratoga had a 134 as both teams finished at 263. San Jose CC, made up of teammates Bill Ayres, Mike Gonzales, Luke Allard and Shane Oberg, and Gilroy GC both qualified for this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, set for August 27-28 at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.

La Rinconada CC is the team to chase after day one of the annual NCGA South Bay Zone Championship.
La Rinconada CC shot a 16-under 126 at par-71 Poppy Hills GC, taking a one stroke lead over Moffett Field GC. The La Rinconada CC squad, made up of teammates Jim Judson, Brian Walsh, Brad Holmgren and Richard Brown, carded eight eagles and two birdies to go against three bogeys and a double-bogey in a format that takes the two best net-scores of a four-man team.
Moffett Field GC, made up of Michael and Andrew Dye, Jerry Thorness and John Blum, posted seven eagles and five birdies but also two bogeys and a double-bogey.
Saratoga CC and Gilroy GC are tied for third at 129.
Tuesday’s second round will see play shift to par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch. Only the two low teams will advance to this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, set for August 27-28 at Poppy Hills and Spyglass HIll.
