USC’s Kaito Onishi Ties Course Record at Poppy Hills Golf Course
When told that his course record flag would go in the Poppy Hills pro shop next to professional Scott McCarron’s, USC freshman Kaito Onishi simply replied, “Sweet.”
Only two months after McCarron shot a record 63 during the annual PGA Tour Champions PURE Insurance Open, Onishi matched the feat, posting his own 63 in Tuesday’s second round of the St. Mary’s Invitational.
Starting on the back-nine, Onishi, a graduate of the sports-rich IMG Academy in Florida, opened with a 32 with birdies on hole Nos. 11, 12, 16 and 18. After making the turn, he’d open with an eagle on the par-5 1st, to be followed by two more birdies at No.3 and No.9.
Poppy Hills was playing at 7,002 yards for the second round of the Invitational.
“I was just solid all around. I was hitting everything in the fairway and had some putts go in,” said Onishi, who had no clue he’d tied the record until Poppy Hills head pro Scott Adams told him. “It’s my career best round, by far.”
