Texas Tech Golfer Sets Pebble Beach Record
Texas Tech senior Hurly Long had quite a day at Pebble Beach Golf Links en route to winning the Carmel Cup.
Long, who hails from Germany, shot a course record 11-under 61 in the second round, breaking the previous course mark of 62 co-held by Tom Kite and David Duval.
A day after opening with a 69, Long went deep, starting his round by going birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie-eagle to be 6-under through six. He’d bogey No.8, but came roaring back with birdies on holes No. 10-11, 14-15 and 17-18 to close in 30.
Long would go on to win the title in a playoff over Oklahoma State’s Hayden Wood.
“There aren’t words to describe it,” Tech coach Greg Sands said in a press release. “A course like this, to have one of our guys come in here and break the course record is phenomenal. This is easily one of the best, if not the best, days I have seen from a player in my 17 years of coaching.”
Kite’s 62 at Pebble Beach came at the 1983 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am. David Duval matched the 62 at the 1997 Pro-Am.
Started in 2011, the Carmel Cup is a 54-hole stroke play event hosted by Vanderbilt University. The field is comprised mostly of top teams from the Big 12 and SEC.
