Champ Shines on U.S. Open Opening Day
Sacramento native and NCGA member Cameron Champ had quite a showing in his U.S. Open debut. On his birthday, nonetheless.
The Texas A&M senior, who’s playing in his first professional event, carded a 2-under-par 70 in Thursday’s opening round at Erin Hills. Champ finished the day tied for 18th, five strokes behind leader Rickie Fowler.
Why the big surge up the standings? Champ, who turned 22, led the field in driving distance at 349.4 yards.
