Poppy Hills No.62 on Best Courses You Can Play
Leaps Into Golf Digest’s “America’s Greatest Courses You Can Play”
Poppy Hills Golf Course has been named one of the nation’s best public courses.
Located in the heart of the Del Monte Forest in Pebble Beach, Poppy Hills came in at No.62 in Golf Digest’s 2017-2018 rankings of “America’s Greatest Courses You Can Play.” It’s the first time the course, which is owned by the Northern California Golf Association, has made the list.
The new rankings appear in the magazine’s recently released June issue.
“We’re honored to be recognized as one of the best public courses in the country,” Poppy Hills General Manager Brad Shupe said. “The ranking is a validation of the renovation and a testament to our superintendent Matt Muhlenbruch and head professional Cole Handley and their respective teams.”
Having undergone an extensive renovation in 2014 by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course now has a more natural feel and has been compared by some to Pinehurst No.2 and Pine Valley. It has also become a leader in water stewardship practices and remains involved with youth-targeted philanthropic endeavors including the highly acclaimed Youth on Course program.
Poppy Hills annually co-hosts the Champions Tour PURE Insurance Open (formerly First Tee Open) with Pebble Beach Golf Links each September. In 2018, the course will host its first USGA championship when the U.S Girls’ Junior Championship tees off July 16-21.
Other Northern California courses in the rankings are Pebble Beach Golf Links (No.1), Spyglass Hill (No.11), Pasatiempo GC (No.18), CordeValle GC (No.42) and The Links at Spanish Bay (No. 45).
“It’s nice to join such an illustrious group in the rankings,” Shupe said.
This past February, Poppy Hills was named National Course of the Year runner-up by the National Golf Course Owners Association
Under the NCGA’s Membership Benefits program, members can play Poppy Hills for just $75.
