Second Annual Run Fore Fun Raises Money for Youth on Course
The Pebble Beach area is known as “the best zip code in golf” and it is easy to see why. What people may not know is that another activity has found a stronghold in the Monterey Peninsula – the running community.
On January 15, Poppy Hills and Fleet Feet Sports brought together runners and golfers for the second annual Run Fore Fun. The four-mile race began behind the Poppy Hills clubhouse, weaved throughout the golf course and finished behind No. 18 green.
For the nearly 200 race participants, the Run Fore Fun offered a unique chance to run along one of Pebble Beach’s scenic golf courses and support a great cause. All proceeds from the event, more than $4,000 in total, go towards Youth on Course, which provides opportunities for kids through access to affordable golf, employment, scholarships and internships.
“Here at Poppy Hills we have a really unique setting,” said Poppy Hills Head Professional Cole Handley. “You look through the Del Monte Forest and see Monterey Bay through the trees. Naturally, it is a perfect place for a nice relaxing run, so we decided to partner with Fleet Feet and the running community involved in helping to support this great foundation.”
As a part of the post-race activities, runners watched on as hundreds of golf balls, each with an assigned contestant or donor, were dropped from a hovering helicopter onto a hole set up on No. 1 tee. The ball that entered the hole first earned its owner, Steve Rappaport, free golf at Poppy Hills for a year.
Even those who didn’t win the ball drop felt like winners with breakfast burritos from Porter’s in the Forest and complimentary Mad Otter Ale.
