Professional Emily Childs and amateur Ty Akabane are on their way to this year’s U.S Women’s Open.
Childs, of Alameda, and Akabane, who hails from Danville, punched their tickets to the championship proper after advancing through a 36-hole Sectional qualifier held Monday at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City.
Childs, a former standout at Cal and winner of the 2010 NCGA Women’s Amateur Championship, was medalist with a score of even-par 144 following rounds of 74 and 70. In the afternoon round, she’d be powered in part by three straight birdies on holes No.3 through No.5.
Akabane, a member of the Junior Tour of Northern California, moved on at 4-over 148 after back-to-back rounds of 74.
Both Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach and Danville’s Sarah Banke came up a stroke short, shooting 149. Banke is a former winner of the San Francisco City Women’s Championship.
This year’s U.S. Women’s Open will tee off July 13-16 at Trump National GC in New Jersey.
