Stanford sophomore Brandon Wu and four others are on their way to Sectional qualifying for this year’s U.S Open.
Wu, the runner-up at the 2014 NCGA Amateur Stroke Play Championship, fired a stellar 9-under 63 in an 18-hole local qualifier held Tuesday at par-72 Yocha Dehe Golf Course in Brooks. Wu posted a 31 on the front-nine thanks to five birdies. On the back-nine, he’d card five more birdies with just one bogey.
Finishing alone in second place after a solid 68 was Sacramento State junior Wonji Choi. Professionals Sean King of Modesto and Matthew Hollinsead of Sacramento tied for third at 69.
The fifth and final automatic advancing spot came down to a playoff between pros Todd Killingsworth (Oregon) and Anders Kristiansen (Norway) and amateur Isaiah Salinda after the trio came in with matching scores of 70. Killingsworth advanced after winning the playoff.
Ten Sectional qualifiers will take place in the U.S. on June 5.
