Berkeley’s Sean Yu and eight others are headed to this year’s California Amateur Championship.
Yu, a redshirt freshman at Cal, fired a medalist-earning 4-under 66 in an 18-hole qualifier held Monday at par-70 San Jose Country Club. Yu was solid, posting five birdies to go against just one bogey.
Also punching their tickets to the championship proper were runner-up Kevin Fryer of Danville (67), Elk Grove’s David Laskin (68) and Folsom’s Austin Fox (69). Coming in at T-4 at 70 were San Luis Obispo’s Grady Smith and Burlingame’s Aleksei Koika. Smith recently won the NCGA Four-Ball Championship with partner Cole Nygren.
Coming in at 71, and also advancing, were Granite Bay’s Brandon Baumgarten, Michael Savin of Belmont and San Jose’s Tommy Dodge.
This year’s California Amateur Championship will tee off June 19-24 at the Olympic Club.
