May 23, 2016
Bellarmine College Preparatory made it two in a row.
Bellarmine, of San Jose, shot a team score of 5-over 365 to run away with a win at the annual NCGA/CIF Boys’ NorCal Championship on Monday at par-72 Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas. Finishing in second place was De La Salle of Concord at 376.
The Bells, who also won the championship in 2015, became the first back-to-back winners since St. Francis of Mountain View (2003-2004). Bellarmine also won the championship in 2005.
The favorites coming in, the Bells didn’t disappoint. Boots Del Biaggio led the team with a 2-under 70, while Eddy Lai, who won the Individual title in 2015, shot a 70. Other Bellarmine scores (best 5-out-of-6) were Austin Murphy (73), Curt Lloyd (73), Berk Harvey (77) and Kolbey Moreno (81).
De La Salle was led by a 69 from senior Joshua McCarthy. Following McCarthy was Nick Orrechia, who had a 75.
Taking third place at 378, and also advancing to the State Championship, was Harker High of San Jose. Harker was paced by a 73 from Ryan Vaughan and a 75 by Scout McNealy. McNealy is the younger brother of Stanford star Maverick McNealy.

Ryan Burnett
On the Individual front, Ryan Burnett of Campolindo (Moraga) led the field with a medalist-earning 68. Burnett posted six birdies overall, but he’d also suffer a double-bogey on the par-4 14th.
McCarthy, the Junior Tour of Northern California Player of the Year in 2014, tied for second at 69 along with Chris Ebster of Gregori High (Modesto). Only six players managed to break par.
The low nine individuals not on an advancing team also earned berths into the State Championship. Joining Burnett and Ebster as those advancing were Pleasant Valley’s Noah Norton (71), David Laskin of Jesuit (71), Joey Burlison of Palma (72), Vista del Lago’s Chandler Kallas (72), Carmel’s George McNeely (72) and Brad Reeves of Lodi (73). The ninth and final spot came down to a playoff between A.J. Fitzgerald of Palma and Rei Echizenya of of Dublin, who each shot 74.
This year’s CIF State Championship will be held June 1 at San Gabriel CC in Southern California.
