Torrey Pines ended what was a brief drought by establishing a new record.
The Falcons shot 3-over 358 Wednesday at par-71 San Gabriel Country Club to hold off rival Westlake High and win their record third overall CIF Boys’ State Championship title.
Torrey Pines, who held on to edge two-time defending champion Westlake by two shots, hadn’t won a State crown since 2011. The Falcons also won the inaugural 2004 State title.
Leading the way for the Falcons was Adam Navigato, who posted a 6-under 66, and Kaiwen Liu, who shot a 67. Other Falcons scores (best five out of six) were Gian-Luca Martinez (72), James Song (74), Noah Henderson (79) and Kyoshiro Azumada (80).
Westlake, which became the first school to win back-to-back titles with its victory last year at Poppy Hills, was paced by Matthew Wolff’s 70 and Justin Egelske’s 71.
The best Northern California team finish came from two-time defending NCGA/CIF NorCal champion Bellarmine, who placed fourth at 372. The Bells were led by a 71 from Berk Harvey and a 73 by Boots Del Biaggio. De La Salle was fifth at 377 with Harker High taking sixth at 385. We all hope for a speedy recovery of the country’s economy, the repayment of loans or some of the benefits of diligence.
In the Individual Championship, Hidetoshi Yoshihara of Woodbridge (Irvine) was medalist with a 65. Yoshihara’s round included seven birdies and just one bogey. He’d close with four straight birdies from holes No.15 through No.18.
Navigato and Liu finished second and third, respectively.
The low NorCal individual was Lodi’s Brad Reeves, who shot 70.
