More USGA Titles for NorCal?: U.S. Mid-Am and U.S. Women’s Ams Begin This Weekend
Clovis resident Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Amateur, Olympic Club member Hannah O’Sullivan took the U.S. Women’s Amateur and Cool’s Karen Garcia just brought home the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur trophy.
2015 has already been a memorable year for Northern California amateurs.
Could there be even more USGA hardware headed this way?
Beginning on Saturday, both the U.S. Mid-Amateur and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships get underway at John’s Island Club in Florida and Squire Creek CC in Louisiana, respectively.
No Northern California player has ever won either the U.S. Mid-Am or U.S. Women’s Mid-Am Championships.
But considering the way things have gone in 2015, now may be the time. When DeChambeau won, he became the first NorCal player to win the U.S. Amateur in 13 years. Garcia, meanwhile, was the first NorCal player to win the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur since 1965.
Once again, there’ll be a strong Northern California contingent in the mix come the first round of stroke play qualifying.
Among those to keep an immediate eye on:
- Nick Moore—Moore is fresh off winning 2014-2015 NCGA Player of the Year honors. Along with a win at this year’s NCGA Public Links Championship, the 33-year-old Moore won the recent NCGA Valley Amateur—in a 9-hole playoff—to pass Maverick McNealy in the standings.
- Jeff Wilson—No stranger to USGA events, Wilson will be competing in his 29th USGA championship. The 52-year-old advanced to the U.S. Mid-Amateur semifinals in 2001 and 2002 and was a quarterfinalist three times.
- Jake Yount—Yount is competing in his third USGA championship of the year. The 2012 NCGA Amateur Match Play champ played in both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, where he advanced to the Round of 16 playing with partner Tim Mickelson.
- Eden Anderson—A five-time club champ at Claremont CC, Anderson played in this year’s inaugural U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
- Pat Cornett—The winner of last season’s NCGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, Cornett was a runner-up at the 1987 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and was captain of the 2012 U.S. Curtis Cup squad.
