Sunday at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and Senior Amateur
Three Northern California women are on to match play at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
Rocklin’s Lynne Cowan, Karen Garcia of Cool and Marianne Towersey of Pebble Beach all secured berths into Monday’s Round of 64 match play after advancing through stroke play qualifying Sunday at Hillwood Country Club in Tennessee.
Cowan earned the No.8 seed after a second round 73 that gave her a two-day stroke play total of 7-over 151. The former California Women’s Amateur Championship winner will take on No.57 Kathy Kurata of Pasadena in the Round of 64.
Both Towersey and Garcia finished stroke play qualifying T-51 (161) after second rounds of 80 and 78, respectively.
Towersey, the No.53 seed, will open vs. No.12 Ginny Burkey of Oregon while the No.55 seeded Garcia will open vs. No.10 Kim Eaton of Arizona.
Santa Cruz’ SandyWoodruff (83-81—164) and Stacey Camara (83-84—167) both missed the cut.
U.S. Senior Amateur Championship
Both Montreaux CC member David Nelson and El Dorado Hills resident Mark Morgan are on their way to Monday’s Round of 64 at Hidden Creek GC in New Jersey.
Michael Staskus’ fate is still in limbo.
Nelson shot 145 (71-74) to finish T-12 in stroke play qualifying, while Morgan shot 150 (74-76) to finish T-54.
Staskus shot a second round 72 to come in at 151 (T-64) and will start Monday by playing in a 12-man playoff for one spot.
Record six-time NCGA Player of the Year Randy Haag missed the cut after a second round 82. The Orinda resident had opened with a 71.
Also missing the cut was Joe Zanassi, who came in at 23-over (82-83).
