Maverick McNealy Assumes No.1 Spot in World Rankings
Following what was an incredible summer for the NCGA, Maverick McNealy has now gotten the fall off to a roaring start.
On Wednesday, the Stanford junior took over the No.1 spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for the first time.
McNealy is the first NorCal native to hold the No.1 position since the WAGR was formed in 2007. Former Cardinal star Patrick Rodgers was the world No.1 from February 26-June 11 of last year, but Rodgers was born in Indiana.
The winner of this year’s NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship, McNealy ascended to the top after winning last week’s Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields. It was his seventh college title in the past 52 weeks.
McNealy took over the top spot from Arizona State senior Jon Rahm, who earned the McCormack Medal as the No. 1-ranked player after the U.S. Amateur.
NCAA and U.S. Amateur champion Bryson DeChambeau, a senior at SMU, is ranked No. 4.
On the women’s side, The Olympic Club member Hannah O’Sullivan is at No.2.
McNealy, DeChambeau and O’Sullivan are all former members of the Junior Tour of Northern California.
