Davis Love III Among Early Confirmed Players for Upcoming First Tee Open
The field for the upcoming Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach continues to take shape.
Among those on the way to the Champions Tour tournament, slated for Sept. 25-27 at Poppy Hills Golf Course and Pebble Beach Golf Links, is Davis Love III.
The 51-year-old Love, whose 21 career victories on the PGA Tour includes two AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am titles (2001, 2003), recently grabbed headlines with his win at the Wyndham Championship, where he became the third oldest champion in PGA Tour history.
The captain of the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup Team, Love heads a field of Champions Tour stars who have confirmed they will compete in the 54-hole First Tee Open, which pairs legendary tour pros with a junior golfer representing chapters of The First Tee from around the country.
Joining Love – who this week is still competing in the PGA TOUR Playoffs – will be defending champion John Cook, as well as fan favorite Fred Couples. Others who have already committed include Senior PGA Championship winner Colin Montgomerie, Senior British Open champion Marco Dawson, Hale Irwin, Tom Lehman and Jeff Maggert.
Love joked last week that while he is committed to playing in Pebble Beach, “I hope I get to withdraw … because it’s opposite the TOUR Championship.”
The TOUR Championship, Sept. 24-27, is limited to the top 30 players remaining in the playoffs, and with Love going into this week at No. 90 on the points list, having a schedule conflict in three weeks is a remote possibility.
“We wish Davis Love the best of luck as he advances through the Fed Ex Cup,” said Steve John, CEO of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, “though selfishly we hope to see him at the Nature Valley First Tee Open because he is so great with the juniors.”
Several past champions of the Nature Valley First Tee Open are also set to return, including Jeff Sluman (2008, 2009, 2011), Kirk Triplett (2012, 2013), Craig Stadler (2004), Hale Irwin (2005) and Scott Simpson (2006). The Nature Valley First Tee Open is a benefit for The First Tee, a nonprofit youth development organization successfully utilizing the game of golf and its inherent values to help young people build character and learn the life skills required for success on and off the golf course.
Play will be conducted on both courses Friday and Saturday, and then only at Pebble Beach on Sunday. All three rounds will be broadcast on the Golf Channel.
As a gift back to the community, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, the group that runs the event, and Nature Valley are providing free tournament admission. No tickets are required. For more information about the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, please visit www.thefirstteeopen.com.
