Champions Tour’s Olin Browne Ties Poppy Hills Record
Champions Tour member Olin Browne grabbed a bit more than the share of the lead Saturday afternoon at this weekend’s Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
The 56-year-old winner of the 2011 U.S. Senior Championship posted a second round 6-under 65 at Poppy Hills, tying the course record previously held by St. Mary’s College senior Jonathan De Los Reyes.
Browne went bogey-free, opening with a 2-under 34 with birdies on holes No.1 and No.6. After making the turn, he eagled the par-5 10th and added another birdie on No.12.
On the finishing par-5 18th, Browne got up-and-down from a greenside bunker for birdie.
“I hit a couple of good shots on the first hole and made birdie and that kind of opened up my day,” said Browne, whose 65 is a tournament record for the First Tee Open at Poppy Hills. “I made one rainmaker of a putt on No.6 and I hooped a wedge on No.10. When you do those kind of things you turn what is a decent day with a 68 into a 65.”
De Los Reyes’ 65, shot in the final round of this year’s NCGA Amateur Stroke Play Championship, broke Blaine McCallister’s record of 66, which had been set during last year’s First Tee Open.
In Friday’s first round, Jesper Parnevik came within one of De Los Reyes’ mark, carding a 66.
