Maverick McNealy, Bryson DeChambeau Named to 2015 Walker Cup Squad
August 10, 2015
Five players were named to the 10-man 2015 U.S. Walker Cup squad on Monday, and two of them have Northern California ties.
NCAA Player of the Year Maverick McNealy of Portola Valley and NCAA champion Bryson DeChambeau of Clovis joined three-time U.S. Open qualifier Beau Hossler, All-American Lee McCoy of Georgia and No.5 world-ranked Hunter Stewart as early picks for the championship, which will be held Sept. 12-13 at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.
The last time two Northern California natives were named to the Walker Cup team was in 1953, when Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward were named to the squad. The last Northern California native to be named was Fresno’s Michael Weaver in 2013. The 2013 squad had four members of the Cal men’s golf team.
“It’s an incredible honor. It’s nice for it to be official now,” McNealy said. “It makes next week less stressful.”
McNealy is tuning up for the U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields by competing in this week’s NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship at Spyglass Hill. DeChambeau was the 2011 Player of the Year on the Junior Tour of Northern California.
U.S. captain John ‘Spider’ Miller is expected to announce the other five team members following next week’s U.S. Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields.
The USGA once again has stipulated that at least two mid-amateurs (age 25 or older) must make the team. The frontrunners for those spots include Nathan Smith and Todd White, who won this year’s inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Olympic Club.
The U.S. leads the overall Walker Cup series, 35-8-1, including a 17-9 victory two years ago at National Golf Links of America.
