Northern California Contingent at Inaugural U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball
May 7, 2015
Now it’s time for the ladies to tee it up.
On Saturday, just three days after the conclusion of the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at the Olympic Club, the first U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship will commence at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
Like the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, there will also be a strong contingent of players with Northern California connections.
Among those slated to compete in the championship are:
- Lucy Li (Redwood City) and Kathleen Scavo (Benicia): Still only 12, Li, the darling of last year’s U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst, will be the youngest competitor in the field. In 2013, she became the youngest competitor in U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship history, competing at 10 years, 10 months and 4 days of age. Scavo also qualified for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, finishing second to Li in the Half Moon Bay Golf Links sectional qualifier, and won the 2012 and 2013 California Junior Girls’ State Championships. The two are currently members of the Junior Tour of Northern California.
- Ty Akabane (Danville) and Kailie Vongsaga (Walnut): Akabane has been one of the top players on the JTNC this season, winning once with two other Top 5 finishes. In 2014, Akabane won the Helen Lengfeld Flight at the California Women’s Amateur Championship. She recently reached the semifinals of the San Francisco Women’s Championship. In April, Vongsaga was named Golfweek’s Junior Girls’ Player of the Week after a win at the AJGA’s Junior All-Star. It was the Youth on Course member’s ninth Top 20 in an AJGA event since 2013. - Marissa Mar (El Macero) and Lila Barton (Dallas, Tx): Mar and Barton played together at Stanford during the 2010-11 year, with Mar captaining the team to a Pac-12 title in 2014. Now both in their 20’s, Mar is a business development analyst for Yahoo, while Barton works as a marketing director for Chegg, an online education service focused on high school and college students.
- Eden Anderson (Oakland) and Shannon Wolfe (Marina Del Rey): Stanford has its representatives, and so does Cal. Both Bears alums, Anderson was the first women’s golf recruit at Cal in 1996 and concluded her four-year career in 1999. Wolfe, who graduated from Cal in 1999, was a three-time All-Pac-10 selection.
- Hannah O’Sullivan (Chandler, Ariz.) and Robyn Ree (Redondo Beach): A former member of the JTNC, O’Sullivan became the youngest winner on the Symetra Tour and the first amateur winner when she captured the season-opening Gateway Classic. She qualified for the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open at 14 and was a semifinalist in the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. In the near future, Ree and O’Sullivan will be teammates at USC. Ree will be her Trojans career this fall, while O’Sullivan has verbally committed to the school for the fall of 2016.
Both Saturday and Sunday’s rounds will consist of stroke play qualifying, with the low 32 advancing to match play.
