April 17, 2015
A pair of Northern California players have been selected to compete in this year’s Palmer Cup.
Maverick McNealy, a sophomore at Stanford, and Carr Vernon, a junior at CSU-Monterey Bay, were named to the U.S. squad on Friday during an announcement on The Golf Channel’s Morning Drive Show.
The two will be among 10 players representing Team USA in the international collegiate event, which pits top players in the U.S. against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland in a Ryder Cup-style format.
This year’s Palmer Cup, named after legend Arnold Palmer, will be held June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois.

McNealy, who’s currently at No.8 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, has four wins this season and seven Top 5 finishes in 10 events. Named as a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist on Wednesday, McNealy is currently third all-time in Stanford single season wins.
Carr, a committee selection and the designated non-Division I player, has nine Top 10’s in 10 events and advanced to the quarterfinals of the North and South Amateur. The Missouri native is the first CSUMB player ever selected to compete on a USA national team.
The head coach of the U.S. squad will be Georgia’s Bruce Heppler. Last year, Team Europe defeated Team USA, 18½ to 11½. The U.S. leads the series 9-8-1.
Former outstanding collegiate players who have competed in the Palmer Cup include Luke Donald, 2009 U.S. Open champ Lucas Glover, 2010 U.S. Open champ Graeme McDowell, Charles Howell III and Dustin Johnson.
Beginning in 2016, one of the 20 participants in the annual Palmer Cup matches will be extended an invitation to compete in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
