They’re not headed back to the U.S. Women’s Open, but Lucy Li of Redwood Shores and Benicia’s Kathleen Scavo will be playing in another USGA championship.
And this time, they’ll be doing it together.

Lucy Li
Playing as a team, Li and Scavo earned a spot in the inaugural U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship on Thursday, carding a medalist-earning 7-under 65 in an 18-hole Sectional qualifier held at par-72 Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. The two proved to be a lethal combo as they’d card seven birdies with no bogeys. The duo’s best stretch came on the back-nine, with five birdies within their first seven holes.
Last year, Li and Scavo each earned trips to the U.S. Women’s Open. Despite missing the cut, Li became the darling of the event due to being–at age 11–the youngest player to ever qualify for the championship. While Li still isn’t even a teenager, Scavo, who also missed the cut, is headed to the University of Oregon this fall. Both Li and Scavo are alums of the Junior Tour of Northern California.
Finishing tied for second and also advancing to the championship proper were the teams of Ty Akabane-Kailie Vongsaga and Gigi Stoll-Danielle Lee, who both came in with matching scores of 4-under 68. Akabane won the Helen Lengfeld flight at last year’s California Women’s Amateur Championship at the age of 13.

Kathleen Scavo
The fourth and final spot came down to a playoff between the teams of Lila Barton-Marissa Mar and Suzanne Kim and Yoonhee Kim, who came in tied at 69 after regulation. The Barton-Mar team won the playoff to earn the final berth.
Among the teams missing the cut were the team of former U.S. Curtis Cup captain Pat Cornett and Rachel Moreaux (71) and the tandem of Lynne Cowan and Karen Garcia (74). The inaugural U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship will tee off May 9-13 at Bandon Dunes.
