Cal Alum Michael Weaver, Stanford Alum Cameron Wilson Receive Exemptions Into AT&T Pro-Am
January 28, 2014
Cal-Berkeley alum Michael Weaver and Stanford alum Cameron Wilson are both headed to Pebble Beach Golf Links to compete in the upcoming AT&T Pro-Am.
Recently, Monterey Peninsula Foundation CEO Steve John confirmed that both Weaver and Wilson have received sponsor exemptions to compete in the tournament, slated for Feb. 12-15 at the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach.
Weaver, who turned professional last year, was runner-up at the 2012 U.S. Amateur. During his 2012-13 season, he became the first Cal golfer to ever play at the Masters as a current member of the Golden Bears. He also played in the U.S. Open, Palmer Cup and Walker Cup in 2013 to become only the second golfer in the history of the sport to play in each of the four events in the same calendar year. In addition, Weaver was a first-team All-American and All-America Scholar in 2012-13, while winning his first collegiate event by sharing individual medalist honors at the NCAA Pullman Regional and adding a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championship.
Wilson, who also turned pro in 2014, won the national title last May as a Cardinal when he birdied the third hole of a playoff against Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans at the NCAA tournament at Prairie Dunes in Kansas, helping the Cardinal to the top score in team qualifying.
With the victory, Wilson joined Sandy Tatum (1942) and Tiger Woods (1996) as the only Cardinal to earn NCAA medalist honors.
In December, he earned his Web.com Tour playing card after finishing T-28 at the tour’s qualifying tournament.
Also receiving exemptions were European Tour winner Shane Lowrey, European Tour member Alez Levy of France and Irishman Paul McGinley. McGinley’s claim to fame is the 10-foot putt he sank on the 18th hole at the 2002 Ryder Cup against Jim Furyk which gave the Euros the victory.
The AT&T Pro-Am has been on the money when granting exemptions in the past. In 2013, Jordan Spieth, who’d go on to earn PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors, received an exemption. Last year, Cal alum Max Homa and former World No.1 ranked amateur Chris Williams got spots in the AT&T. Homa is now a member of the PGA Tour after finishing 32nd at last year’s Web.com Tour Finals.
