At least after opening day, it appears that determining the winners at this year’s Northern California Women’s Four-Ball Championship is going to come down to the final strokes.
Playing at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course, each of the championship’s three flights were a logjam following Wednesday’s first round.
In the Chardonnay Flight, three teams—Suejane Han and Christine Leisy, Nancy Boggs and Caroline Haug and Bridget Wilson and Michelle Gunner–all found thr top of the leaderboard after coming with matching scores of 2-under 69.
Han and Leisy, playing out of Cinnabar Hills Ladies GC, posted an eagle and three birdies to go against a bogey and double-bogey. Both Boggs and Haug and Wilson and Gunner had wilder days. The Boggs/Haug squad had seven birdies and five bogeys, while Wilson and Gunner had an eagle and six birdies but also two bogeys and two double-bogeys.
To make things even more interesting, two teams–Rosie Wallis and Ruth Brown and Ann Fuller and Tamara Blake–are just two back of the leaders after shooting 71.
The Merlot flight is also packed at the top. There, another three teams–Carolyn Stull and Judy Wettstein, Monica Saneholtz and Ann Bassford and Michelle Welsh and Missy Arington–are tied for the lead after shooting 67.
Again the three have company. Just a stroke back is the tandem of Stacey Baba and Sue Stryker, while only two behind after a 69 is the team of Tina Barker and Dolly Coleman.
Over in the Zinfandel Flight, there’s yet another tie. Julie Peele and Denise Kam and the team of Martha Hagler and Sue Parker are ahead after posting identical rounds of 67.
Once again though, it’s still wide open. Just a stroke back is the tandem of Alba Rodriguez and Beverley Olson following a 68, while the tandems of Leslie Voegtly and Stephanie Bellato and Linda Neal and Louann DeClaire are just two behind after shooting 69.
Thursday’s final round will tee off at 8 a.m.
