Joshua McCarthy went wire-to-wire for the win, while Yoonhee Kim had a stellar final round to come from behind and win.
McCarthy, who hails from Danville, shot 43 using the Stableford system to finish with 90 points, and Kim, of San Ramon, had a 39 to come in with 78 points as the duo won the Boys’ 16-18 and Girls’ 15-18 divisions, respectively, at Thursday’s Northern California Junior Players Championship at Rancho Canada Golf Course in Carmel Valley.
The 2014 Junior Tour Player of the Year, McCarthy posted five birdies to go against three bogeys. He’d defeat three players–Christopher Ebster, Matt Robinson and Devrath Das–by eight points. Ebster had a final round 43, Robinson shot 40 and Das had a 36.
McCarthy took the first round lead with a score of 47 points.
Kim, a high school senior, made her move by tallying four birdies to go with three bogeys and a double-bogey. She’d defeat co-runner-ups Neeve Chen of Roseville and Tammy Lim of Fresno by three points.
Chen shot 36, while Lim had a final round 35. First round leader Gurman Kaur of Elk Grove fell back to fourth place at 67 after a 29.
In the Boys’ 14-15 division, Thomas Hutchison of San Jose shot a 42 to come in at 84 and defeat co-runner-ups Cameron Henry and Ryan Lu by one point. Hutchison, who finished second at this year’s San Francisco City Championship, had five birdies and four bogeys.
Henry, of Los Gatos, had a final round 42, while Lu, who hails from San Leandro, had a 40.
The Boys’ 12-13 division title went to Cupertino’s Ethan Chung with a score of 78. The Girls’ 12-14 division title was won by Katherin Sung of Palo Alto with 66 points.

Danville’s Joshua McCarthy and Gurman Kaur of Elk Grove are the players to chase after day one of the Northern California Junior Players Championship at Rancho Canada Golf Course in Carmel Valley.
McCarthy, the 2014 Junior Tour of Northern California Player of the Year, shot 47 using the Stableford system to take the lead in the Boys’ 16-18 division. Devrath Das of San Jose is one point back after posting a 46.
In the Girls’ 15-18 division, Kaur posted a 38 to take a five point lead over Tammy Lim of Fresno and San Ramon’s Angela Bagasbas, who both came in at 33.
Over in the Girls’ 12-14 division, Katherine Sung of Palo Alto grabbed the lead after shooting 34.
Brendan Hy of San Ramon holds the lead in the Boys’ 14-15 division with an opening 44, while Andrew Bagasbas jumped into the lead in the Boys’ 12-13 division after scoring a 41.
The championship concludes Thursday at Rancho Canada.
