Two of the top seeds didn’t last long, as match play began at the annual San Francisco City Championship.
No.1 seed Jason Anthony of Fairfield won his opening match, but was booted in the Round of 32, falling to No.32 Brendon Choe on the 19th hole. Choe is a freshman in high school.
Also falling victim to the upset was No.3 seed Zack Sims, who lost his Round of 64 match, 2 and 1, to No.62 seed Lucas Carper. Carper, a member of the Junior Tour of Northern California, is an 8th grader.
Getting through the weekend were No.2 seed Isaiah Salinda, who won his first two matches, 3 and 2 and 2 and 1, and No.4 Justin Suh, who advanced to the Round of 16 with 6 and 4 and 2 and 1 victories. Suh was the JTNC Player of the Year in 2013 and won the Individual title at last year’s CIF State Championship.
In the Women’s Championship, all four of the top seeds advanced to the Round of 16. No.1 seed Bibilani Liu won 7 and 5, No.2 Belinda Hu won her match 6 and 4, No.3 seed Sabrina Iqbal claimed an 8 and 7 win and No.4 seed Amanjoty Sangha won, 2-up. Iqbal was the 2014 JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year.
Also moving on to the Sweet 16 in the Women’s Championship was No.7 Lucy Li of Redwood Shores, who won her opening match, 4 and 2. Li and partner Kathleen Scavo recently qualified for the upcoming U.S. Women’s Four-Ball Championship.
All four top seeds also moved on in the Senior Championship. Winners there were No.1 seed Dale Bouguennec, No.2 seed Jim Williams, No.3 Mark Miller and No.4 Michael Staskus.
Play continues in each division, including the Super Senior Championship, this weekend. The semi-finals and finals will be held at TPC Harding Park the weekend of April 11-12.
