The race for medalist honors was a logjam, but that wasn’t the primary objective anyways.
Twelve players earned spots into this year’s California Amateur Championship after advancing through a qualifier held Tuesday at par-72 TPC Stonebrae.
In what became a scramble for medalist honors, eight players tied for first with matching 70’s–Kevin Fryer of San Ramon, Dylan Smith of Novato, Jason Brendel of Windsor, Fremont’s Aaron Chen, Stockton’s Seungjae Maeng, Jerry Ledzinski of Carmel, Alex Reno of Santa Rosa and Castro Valley’s Brandon McNally.
The final four automatic spots came down to a playoff between six players. Advancing were Stephen Simpkin, Zack Bailey, Brandon Lee and Kevin Velo.
The first alternate is Daniel Kim. The second alternate spot went to Brendon Choe.
This year’s California Amateur Championship will tee off June 22-27 at Lake Merced GC in Daly City.
