Northern California amateur great Randy Haag is headed back to the U.S. Senior Open. And he won’t have far to travel.
Haag, who holds the NCGA record for most Player of the Year titles with six, punched his ticket to this year’s championship at Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento after shooting a 1-over 71 in an 18-hole qualifier held Monday at par-71 The Olmpic Club (Lake Course).
A member of the Olympic Club, Haag started his round on the 9th hole. He’d bogey two of his first four holes, but quickly got back on track with a birdie on No.13 and another birdie on the 18th. After making the turn, he’d double-bogey the par-3 3rd but again came back, birdying the 5th.
Michael Miles, a pro out of Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, was medalist with a stellar 66 that included six birdies and a bogey.
The first alternate spot went to amateur Mark Sanchez of Kentfield at 73. The second alternate spot went to pro Greg Galasso after Galasso beat out amateur Gary Vanier in a playoff. Both Galasso and Vanier, who won this year’s San Francisco City Senior Championship, shot 74.
This year’s U.S. Senior Open will tee off June 25-28 at Del Paso CC.
