Comebacks were the theme at the annual NCGA North Zone Championship.
Canyon Oaks Country Club shot a final round 9-under 131 to make up a two-stroke deficit and win the title Tuesday at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch. Also moving up the leaderboard was Lava Creek Golf Club, who came from 10 shots behind to finish in second place after a final round 124.
Playing in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team, both Canyon Oaks CC and Lava Creek GC earned spots into this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, slated for August 24-25 at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.
Canyon Oaks CC, comprised of teammates Kent Rasmussen, David Foreman, Gregory Foutz and James Serrao, finished the two-day event with a total score of 23-under 259. Lava Creek GC, made up of teammates of Casey Zampa, Wally Zampa, Leo Lemmus and Patrick Welch, ended up with a total of 22-under 260.
Gold Hills Golf Club, which had entered the final round holding a slim two-stroke lead, fell to third place at 261 after a final round 135.
Canyon Oaks made its big move by posting five eagles and three birdies to go with three bogeys and a double-bogey. Entering the final round, Canyon Oaks was one of four squads that were tied for second, two behind Gold Hills.
While Canyon Oaks was able to leap frog Gold Hills, Lava Creek earned the second Zone Championship with a trampoline-like jump. A day after carding a 6-under 136 in the first round at Poppy Hills, Lava Creek turned up the heat, posting seven eagles and four birdies to go with two bogeys and a double-bogey. Four of the team’s seven eagles came on the back nine.
A day after going 16-under with six eagles and six birdies at Poppy Hills, Gold Hills, comprised of Peter Delevati, James Clark, David Crandell and Eric Weber, could only muster up three eagles and a pair of birdies. The squad had a chance to make things even more interesting but had to settle for pars on both the 17th and 18th holes.
The Eureka Golf Course squad–Eddie Schrock, David Olson, Rocky McCovey and Mike Smith–had a 132 to finish alone in fourth place at 262. Both Wilcox Oaks GC and Golf Club of Tierra Oaks finished T-5 at 263.

Gold Hills Golf Club has the early lead, but it appears that the annual NCGA North Zone Championship could come down to the last stroke.
Gold Hills GC, comprised of teammates Peter Delevati, James Clark, David Crandell and Eric Weber, jumped to the top of the leaderboard Monday by posting a 16-under 126 at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course.
Playing in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team, Gold Hills carded six eagles and six birdies to go with two bogeys and a double-bogey.
While Gold Hills is on top, there’s a slew of teams right on their heels. Redwood Empire Golf and Country Club, Golf Club of Tierra Oaks, Butte Creek Country Club and Canyon Oaks Golf Club are all tied for second at 128, just two behind the leaders.
Redwood Empire G&CC, made up of teammates Louie Shaha, Steven Branstetter, Dylan Feirabend and Greg Gomes, posted four eagles and five birdies to go with just two bogeys. Golf Club of Tierra Oaks–Chris Waterman, John Boyd, Tom Huckabay and Aaron Pickle–penciled in four eagles, seven birdies and two bogeys, while the squad from Butte Creek, made up of teammates Pat Pillsbury, Dominic Benedet, Tadd Brothers and Goerge Boelman, had seven eagles, five birdies, three bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys. The Canyon Oaks squad, comprised of Kent Rasmussen, David Foreman, Gregory Foutz and James Serrao, had six eagles, three birdies and a double-bogey.
Also in the mix is Eureka GC, which is just four behind Gold Hills after an opening round 130.
The low two teams will advance to this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, slated for August 24-25 at Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills. Last year, Shelter Cove GC and Benbow GC advanced to the championship. Both Benbow GC and Shelter Cove GC opened with matching scores of 131, leaving them within striking distance at five behind.
Tuesday’s final round will be held at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch.
