Plumas Lake Golf and Country Club made it two in a row.
Plumas Lake G&CC shot a final round 9-under 133 Friday at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course to hold off Lake Wildwood and win the annual NCGA North Valley Zone Championship by one.
The Plumas Lake G&CC squad, comprised of teammates Rick Vardell, Bernie Taddy, Ronnie Davis and Ed Power, finished the two-day event with a total score of 24-under 258 in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team. In Thursday’s first round at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch, they took a one-stroke lead after carding a 125. At Poppy Hills, they’d post two eagles and seven birdies to go against two bogeys and a double-bogey.
Lake Wildwood GC, which began the second round a stroke behind the leaders, couldn’t get any closer, also carding a 133 at Poppy Hills. The Lake Wildwood GC team, made up of teammates Jim Keck, Eric Slinger, Tom Fridman and William King, penciled in four eagles and five birdies but also had two bogeys and a double-bogey.
Both champion Plumas Lake G&CC and Lake Wildwood GC earned spots into this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, to be held August 24-25 at Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills.
Trying to make a charge was third place finisher Arbuckle GC. A day after shooting 136 at Carmel Valley Ranch, Arbuckle bounced back with a day-low 17-under 125 at Poppy Hills. The team, made up of teammates Rick Strain, Derick Strain, Thom Stocking and Greg Weber, racked up six eagles and five birdies with only three bogeys.
Ukiah GC and Yolo Fliers Club finished T-4 at 265 after final rounds of 128 and 130, respectively.
