Foxtail Golf Club came back to take the title, but Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club will also be moving on.
Foxtail GC of Rohnert Park shot a final round 6-under 136 at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course on Tuesday, coming from a stroke back to win the annual NCGA North Bay Zone Championship by six strokes over runner-up Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club. Both teams earned automatic spots into this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, slated for August 24-25 at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.
Playing at times in severe winds, the Foxtail squad–teammates Ryan Horton, Jim Paustenbach, Steve Ikard and Douglas Meiswinkel–posted two eagles and seven birdies to go with a bogey and two-bogeys in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team. In Monday’s first round at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch, the Foxtail squad shot 120, leaving them a stroke behind leader Santa Rosa G&CC.
Santa Rosa G&CC, comprised of teammates Wade Farris, Scott Silveira, John Bly and Craig Worthen, slipped to a 1-over 143 in the final round to finish at 262.
Despite shooting 24 strokes higher in the second round, they’d hold off both Healdsburg at Tayman and Sonoma Golf Club for a coveted berth into the championship. During their round at Poppy Hills, Santa Rosa G&CC penciled in three eagles and three birdies but they’d also suffer three bogeys, a double-bogey and two others.
Healdsburg at Tayman, made up of teammates Tom Rohrsen, Tim Van Vranken, Michael Forchini and Tony Pastene, shot 134 to come in T-3 at 264. Also finishing T-3 was Sonoma GC (Barry Reder, David Stadlin, John Randazzo and Bruce Braden) after a final round 139.
Three teams–Rooster Run GC, Indian Valley GC and Napa Valley GC–finished tied for fifth at 266.
