Major Champions Get First Look at New Poppy Hills
September 24, 2014
First Tee Open week is just getting underway, and there’s already a gaggle of major champions pacing the fairways of the new Poppy Hills Golf Course.
Among those getting their first look at the recently renovated layout on Wednesday was the power group of former major winners Larry Mize, Tom Kite and Scott Simpson.
Mize will always be remembered for his chip in on the 11th at Augusta National to win the 1987 Masters.
Kite and Simpson, meanwhile, won their majors right here in Northern California—Kite capturing the wind swept 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and Simpson winning the 1987 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club.
Also getting in practice rounds at Poppy Hills on Wednesday were Steve Lowery, who beat Vijay Singh in a playoff to win the 2008 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and lefty Russ Cochran, who won the 2011 Senior British Open.
There too was of course a number of The First Tee participants, who as usual looked thrilled by it all.
Practice rounds for the championship, which features 81 The First Tee juniors competing side-by-side with 81 Champions Tour members and begins Friday at Pebble Beach and Poppy Hills, will also be held on Thursday.
Among Thursday’s highlights will be the Coca-Cola Challenge, to be held starting at 2 p.m. on the No.1 tee at Pebble Beach. The event features six Champions Tour pros paired with six The First Tee juniors, playing five holes (No.1, 2, 3, 17 and 18) at Pebble Beach for a charity purse of $40,000.
Admission is free all week. Check out the photo gallery from Wednesday’s action below.
