Tanner Hughes made it two in a row on the AmateurGolf.com circuit.
Hughes, a redshirt freshman at Cal, shot a final round 3-under 68 Sunday to finish at 2-under 140 and win the AmateurGolf.com Tour Championship held at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course. Hughes was coming off a win at the AmateurGolf.com Christmas Classic held at Del Monte Golf Course. It is believed that Hughes is the first player to win the Classic and Tour Championship in the same year.
In nabbing the title, Hughes was clutch when it mattered. He’d sink an 8-footer for birdie on the par-5 18th. defeating runner-up Sean Crocker by a stroke. Hughes had rounds of 72-68, while Crocker shot 71-70 to finish at 141.
“I thought the putt was probably to win,” Hughes told AmateurGolf.com. “I hit the green in two, but left the first putt short and was glad to finish off the round that way.”
Third place went to Pleasanton’s Jonny Baxter at 142 (72-70).
In the Senior Championship, Mark Miller and Dale Bouguennec finished regulation tied at 3-over 145 after final rounds of 71 and 74, respectively. Miller took the title, winning the first playoff hole (No.1) with a par.
Miller was NCGA Senior Player of the Year in both 2009 and 2010.
Terry Foreman, the runner-up in this year’s NCGA Senior Amateur Match Play Championship, finished third at 146 (73-73).
