Pebble Beach resident Michael Decker put on a fireworks show at the annual Monterey City Amateur.
Decker, a sophomore at Vanderbilt University, shot a final round 68 Sunday at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey to finish with a tournament record score of 14-under 202 and an eight stroke victory.
Runner-up was Seaside resident and 2013 NCGA Public Links champ Nick Moore, who came in at 6-under 210 in the three-day, 54-hole stroke play event. In third at 142 following a 72 was Regina De Guzman, who plays at San Jose State and was one of two females in the field.
Decker, who helped Stevenson School claim the CIF State Boys’ Golf Championship in 2013, the first ever State title in school history, shot rounds of 69-65-68. For Sunday’s final round, he had a teammate at Vanderbilt as his caddie. The friend just happened to be in town for the day.
Decker entered the final round with a five stroke lead over Hunter Rappleye. Rappleye fell back after a final round 79.
Six-time NCGA Player of the Year Randy Haag shot a final round 71 to finish tied for sixth at even-par 216. Also finishing at 216 were four-time NCGA POY Casey Boyns, former Stevenson School standout Skyler Finnell and 2014 NCGA Public Links champ Austin Roberts.
Boyns, a longtime caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links, won the Senior Championship on Saturday after shooting a 69 to finish at 1-under 143.
Taking second in the Senior championship was Scott Anderson at 148 (72-76). Three-time defending NCGA Senior Player of the Year Jim Knoll placed third at 149 (76-73).
