San Rafael’s Alex Franklin and Turlock’s Paul Smith are headed to this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship.
Franklin shot a medalist-earning 5-under 137 to grab the top spot in Monday’s 36-hole sectional qualifier at par-71 San Joaquin Country Club, while Smith was runner-up at 138.
Only two automatic berths into the championship were available at the qualifier.
Franklin, who plays at Oregon State, was sensational in the first round, carding a 68 that included four birdies and just one bogey. In his second round, the Marin College transfer had five birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey for a 69.
Smith, who plays at USC, went from a 71 to a second round 67 to earn his trip. The former NCAA Division II PING All-American pick at CSU-Stanislaus had the hot hand in the afternoon, posting five birdies with just one bogey.
This year’s U.S. Amateur Championship will be held at Atlanta Athletic Club in Atlanta, Georgia on August 11-17.
