Elk Grove resident Andrej Bevins and Chico resident Tyler Collier are headed to this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship.
Bevins shot 9-under 133 and Collier shot 4-under 138 and defeated two players in a playoff to advance to the championship in a 36-hole qualifier held Monday at par-72 Butte Creek Country Club.
Bevins, a junior at the University of New Mexico, was flawless, carding an eagle, seven birdies and 28 pars over his two rounds to beat the field by five strokes.
Collier finished regulation tied at 138 with fellow Chico residents Kurt Kitayama and William Flitcroft. In the playoff, and with just one spot remaining, both Kitayama and Collier tied on the first hole with matching pars, while Flitcroft made bogey.
Collier and Kityama proceeded to keep dueling, until Collier prevailed on the 5th playoff hole.
Kitayama will be first alternate, while Flitcroft is second alternate.
This year’s U.S. Amateur will tee off August 11-17 at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, GA.
