Pebble Beach resident Luke Vivolo and Salinas resident Matt Pinizzotto are headed back to the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Vivolo shot a medalist-earning 9-under 133 and Pinizzotto shot 2-under 140 as the two finished one-two in a 36-hole qualifier held Monday ar par 72 Almaden Country Club.
Vivolo, who plays at UC Davis, was sensational in both of his rounds. The former Carmel High standout carded rounds of 66 and 67 to easily claim first place. Overall, Vivolo carded 12 birdies to go with just three bogeys.
Pinizzotto, who plays at UCLA, had rounds of 67 and 73 to move on. The Palma High product was buoyed by an eagle in his first round.
Claiming the final third spot was Atherton’s Jonathan Garrick, who came in at 142 (72-70) and won a playoff between three players.
The first alternate is Travis Sayer of San Jose, who shot 67-75.
The second alternate is Hawaii’s Andrew Chin, who had rounds of 71-71.
This year’s U.S. Amateur Championship will tee off August 11-17 at Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia.
