Wawona Golf Course and Sierra Meadows GC didn’t give up their top two positions.
Wawona GC shot 19-under 121 Tuesday at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch to wrap up the title in the annual NCGA South Sierra Zone Championship with a two-day score of 39-under 245. Sierra Meadows GC also shot 121 to finish in second place.

Both squads earned automatic trips to the upcoming NCGA Zone Championship, to be held August 25-26 at Poppy Hills GC and Spyglass Hill.
Wawona GC, made up of teammates Frank Yost, Arlene Yost, David Yost and Bill Carroll, carded eight eagles, six birdies and three bogeys in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team. The Wawona GC had taken the lead in the first round after posting a 20-under 124 at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course.
Sierra Meadows GC, made up of teammates Michael Best, Travis Falany, Paul Varney and David Denson, had seven eagles, four birdies and one bogey. The Sierra Meadows GC squad had entered the second round in second place, just two behind the leaders.

Making a push to finish in third place was Twain Harte GC. The Twain Harte GC team, comprised of Bruce Sitton, Tom Halman, Gary Pendleton and Rudy Flores shot 122 a day after carding 132 to come in at 30-under 254.
Tahoe City GC shot 125 to finish alone in fourth place at 255. Apple Mountain GC and Phoenix Lake GC finished tied for fifth at 255 after rounds of 125 and 128, respectively.

Things are pretty tight following Monday’s first round of this year’s NCGA South Sierra Zone Championship at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey.
Wawona Golf Club jumped into the lead, opening the championship with a 20-under 124. The Wawona GC squad, made up of teammates Frank Yost, Arlene Yost, David Yost and Bill Carroll, went bogey free with seven eagles and four birdies using a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team.
Just two strokes back after an opening 18-under 126 is Sierra Meadows Golf Club. Sierra Meadows GC, comprised of Michael Best, Travis Falany, Paul Varney and David Denson, also went bogey free, carding five eagles and eight birdies.
In at 127, just three behind the winners, is Phoenix Lake GC. The Phoenix Lake GC squad, made up of teammates Ruben Flores, Ronald M. Goodman, John Griffin and Woodson Norvell, penciled in six eagles and five birdies but also two bogeys.
Mountain Springs GC is alone in fourth place at 128. Sequoia Woods GC is in fifth at 129.
The two low teams will advance to this year’s NCGA Zone Championship, slated for August 25-26 at Poppy Hills GC and Spyglass Hill.
Tuesday’s second round will be held at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch.
