This one literally became a one horse race.
Wildhorse Golf Club went wire-to-wire, shooting a 19-under 121 at par-70 Carmel Valley Ranch on Tuesday to finish at 47-under 237 and easily win the NCGA Sacramento Zone Championship by 10 strokes over runner-up Cordova Golf Club.
With their finish, both Wildhorse GC and Cordova GC earned automatic berths into the 48th annual NCGA Zone Championship, set to tee off August 25-26 at Poppy Hills GC and Spyglass Hill.
Wildhorse GC only held a one-stroke lead over Cordova GC entering the final round after carding a 28 under 116 at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course on Monday.
In Tuesday’s finale at the Ranch, Wildhorse GC—made up of Lee Fuller, William Hawthorne, Mike Heinze and Derek Wright—upped the ante by posting a day-low 121 that included seven eagles, six birdies and two pars to go with just two bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-4 14th. The next best score of the day was 126, shot by both Davis Golf Course and Valley Hi Country Club.
In Monday’s first round at historic Del Monte, Wildhorse had 12 eagles and one par.
While Cordova GC couldn’t catch Wildhorse, it did go low enough—posting a 10-under 130—to stay in second place. Cordova GC, comprised of teammates Michael Winch, John Hobgood, Michael Tardio and Eddie Torix, had five eagles and two birdies but had to settle for nine pars while also suffering two bogeys.
Emerald Lakes Golf Club, comprised of Gregory Burghardt, Stan Glaser, Joey Fleeman and Joe Martin, snuck into third place at 253 after carding a final round 13-under 127. Emerald Lakes’ scorecard included three eagles and eight birdies but also five pars and two bogeys.
The Wildhawk Golf Club squad—Chuck King, Tony Potter, Brian Anderson and Scott Shafer– which had began the day in third place slipped back to fourth at 254 after posting an 11-under 129 that featured three eagles, five birdies and nine pars and a bogey.

Monterey, CA—Wildhorse Golf Club took the lead in Monday’s first round of the NCGA Sacramento Zone Championship, but just barely.
The Wildhorse squad (Lee Fuller, Mike Heinze, William Hawthorne and Derek Wright) posted a score of 28-under 116 Monday at par-72 Del Monte Golf Course to take the lead in the championship, which features a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team.
On the day, Wildhorse carded 12 net eagles, one birdie and five pars.
Just a stroke behind the Wildhorse team is the squad from Cordova GC. The Cordova team–made up of John Hobgood, Michael Winch, Michael Tardio and Eddie Torix—posted a 27-under 117 to finish just a stroke shy of the leaders.
The Cordova squad also had a field day, carding eight eagles and seven birdies to go with two pars and just a lone bogey. The team played Del Monte’s par-4’s to the tune of 17-under.
Alone in third place after day one at 19-under 125 is the Wildhawk GC team, comprised of Brian Anderson, Chuck King, Tony Potter and Scott Shafer.
Finishing the first round tied for fourth at 126, 10 behind the leaders, were the teams of Emerald Lakes GC and Green Tree GC.
The Emerald Lakes squad consists of Gregory Burghardt, Stan Glaser, Joey Fleeman and JoeMartin. The Green Tree team features Guy Bush, Raymond Bagley, Joseph Lopez and Andrew Hickson.
Today’s second round will be held at Carmel Valley Ranch. The two low squads will advance to the 48th annual NCGA Zone Championship, to be held August 25-26 at the new Poppy Hills course and Spyglass Hill.
Last year, Sacramento GC and Dry Creek GC moved on to the championship proper.
