Earning a spot in the upcoming 53rd annual NCGA Senior Championship was the goal as qualifying was held at four separate sites on Thursday.
At par-72 Boundary Oak Golf Course in Walnut Creek, Atascadero GC member David Ujihara led the way with a medalist 1-under 71. Finishing a stroke behind Ujihara at 72 were Roddy Ranch’s Robert Olds, Jim Williams of Orinda CC and E-Club Easy Bay member Don Carter. Olds placed third in the 2013 NCGA Super Senior Championship.
Overall, 28 spots in the championship were awarded at Boundary Oak.
Leading the way at par-72 Riverside of Fresno was amateurgolf.com member John Enright, who posted a 1-over 73. A stroke behind Enright at 74 were fellow Atascadero GC members Gary Wing and Clayton Davis.
Fourteen spots were garnered at Riverside.
Over at par-72 Darkhorse GC in Auburn, three players tied for medalist honors. Barry Brigg of Richmond CC, Michael Davis of Serrano CC and Canyon Oaks’ Rick Dollarhide all came in with 75’s.
At Darkhorse, 22 players earned spots.
The par-70 Sunnyvale GC also hosted a qualifier. There, Anthony Gray was medalist with a 71, with three players–Jon Cook, Charles Follett and Stephen Schroeder–coming in a 72.
The championship will be held April 28-29 at Spyglass Hill GC.
Last year The Olympic Club member Gary Vanier won the title after defeating Casey Boyns in a sudden-death playoff. For Vanier, it was his second title (2009) in five years.
