Getting spots in the upcoming 48th annual NCGA Four-Ball Championship was the goal as qualifying for the championship was held at five different sites on Friday.
Over at par-72 Darkhorse Golf Club in Auburn, the tandem of Granite Bay Golf Club members Gary Delbaquiere and Scott Colby led the way with a medalist earning 5-under 67. Just a stroke behind the two at 68 was the team of Jeff Burkhead and Spencer Page, who play out of Whitney Oaks GC and the tandem of Michael Lee and Jeff Hoffman.
Four teams came in at 69, including the tandem of Cherry Island GC members Dan Orovich and Juan Pablo Gonzalez. Overall, 18 spots were up for grabs at Darkhorse.
Down at par-71 Eagle Ridge GC in Gilroy, 16 spots were available. There, the tandem of eClub South Bay member Philip Diaz and Eagle Ridge GC member Kevin Noto paved the way with a brilliant 64.
The next closest team was the tandem of eClub South Bay member Steve Woods and eClub Sacramento member Jeff Gilchrist, who signed off on a 66. Two teams came in at 67—the tandem of eClub San Francisco member Daniel Griffiths and Mark Griffiths of Torrey Pines GC and the team of Green Hills GC member Andrew Tilton and Olympic Club member Dashiell Lindsell.
Over at par-72 Foxtail GC (North Course) in Rohnert Park, two teams tied for medalist honors. Both the tandem of Olympic Club member Mark Mance and eClub San Francisco member Stephen Sparolini and team of Somerset CC member Bowen Osborn and San Geronimo GC member Larry Salk came in with identical 67’s. Sparolini is a former winner of the annual San Francisco City Championship.
Three teams came in just a stroke behind the duo at Foxtail, where 11 spots were available. The teams of Cameron Park GC members John Hayes and David Koski, Ukiah GC members Brett Lunde and Graham Beard and Richard Shone (Santa Rosa G&CC) and Mark Shone (Olympic Club) all finished at 68.
At Oakland’s par-72 Metropolitan GL, meanwhile, another 18 spots were available. There, El Macero CC members Scott Raber and Ben Corfee led the way with a medalist earning 66. Coming in just a stroke behind at 67 were four groups including eClub Sacramento member Austin Roberts and eClub Monterey Bay member Andrew Roberts. Austin Roberts, the younger of the two brothers, just recently wrapped up the title in the annual NCGA Public Links Championship, beating runner-up Hayden Shieh by a stroke.
The qualifier at par-72 Riverbend GC in Madera, like Eagle Ridge, had 11 spots available. Brett Viboch, a member of eClub East Bay and Oakhurst CC member Bobby Bucey teamed up to fire a medalist earning 9-under 63.
Three teams came in a stroke back at 64, including the tandem of Sunnyside CC members Steve Daniele and Michael Unquez.
The championship proper will tee off May 9-11 at Spyglass Hill.
