Rancho Murieta CC
October 26-27, 2013
The Junior Tour Fall Series ended on Sunday with a visit to Rancho Murieta CC, for the eighth tournament in the past 11 weeks, and unlike previous events where at least on flight has a spirited competition for first place, this week all four flights had champions win by margins of at least four strokes.
In the boys championship flight, Austen Sandoval of Sacramento won by margin of five strokes, thanks to the merits of his first round. Saturday, on Rancho Murieta’s South Course, the 16-year-old fired a 5-under-par 67, which included five birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 10, 12 and 18 in a bogey-free effort. Despite scoring eight strokes higher on the North Course on Sunday with a 3-over-par 75, which included four birdies, five bogeys and double bogey, Sandoval’s 142, 2-under-par was the cream of the crop. In second place was Ashkaan Hakim finishing with a 36-hole total of 147, 3-over-par. Hakim was in good position to compete for top prize after a first round 3-under-par 69, but a final round 6-over-par 78 squandered any opportunity for a gold medal. Taking third place with a 36-hole score of 148, 4-over-par was Fremont’s Vivek Vasireddy, who put together back-to-back rounds of 74.
The girls championship flight’s dominating winner was Redwood Shores Lucy Li, who won by six strokes. Li, much like her counterpart in the boys championship flight, got off to a hot start in the first round before playing noticeably worse in the final round, yet she still came out on top. In the first round, the 11-year-old fired a 3-under-par 69 on the South Course, which included five birdies and two bogeys. Then in Sunday’s round on the North Course, Li posted a 7-over-par 79 to finish with a 148, 4-over-par total. Earning second place with a solid final round was Marina’s Jessica Fore, who followed a first round 81 with a 73 to finish at 154, 10-over-par. Belinda Hu also finished at 154, 10-over-par, but earned third place after a scorecard playoff. The San Ramon resident followed a first round 75 with a final round 79.
The largest margin of victory came in the boys first flight with Aditya Kumar of Fremont winning by seven strokes. Kumar opened with a first round of 75 on the South Course, yet was surprisingly not atop the leaderboard and instead in third place. However, a final round of even-par 72 on the North Course was seven strokes better than any final round score in his flight, giving him a 147, 3-over-par total. Juan Torres of Alameda, who held the first round lead after a 73, earned second place via a scorecard playoff finishing at 154, 10-over-par. Settling for third place was Cooper Hunt of El Dorado Hills, who also finished at 10-over-par with rounds of 74 and 80.
In the girls first flight, Aishvarya Bedi of San Jose earned a four-stroke margin of victory with a 36-hole score of 167, 23-over-par. Bedi captured the lead after a first round of 82 on the South Course and then followed it up with a 85 on the North Course. Fellow San Jose resident Kristine Tran was awarded second place, firing a 36-hole score of 171, 27-over-par with rounds of 84 and 87. Faith Low of Foster City took home third place with a two-day total of 174, 30-over-par, which included rounds of 89 and 85.
