ROSEVILLE – Craig Gandy earned medalist honors in CGA Senior Amateur Qualifying on Monday at Sierra View CC. Gandy, a Roseville resident, felt right at home firing a 4-under-par 68, which included six birdies and two bogeys.
Besides Gandy 12 other players qualified for the championship, with qualifying scores varying from 70 to 75. Finishing alone in second place with a 2-under-par 70 was Bob Rowland of Danville. Rowland’s round included four birdies and two bogeys. Taking solo third place with a 1-under-par 71 was Gene Ackerman of Elk Grove, converting four birdies and three bogeys.
Tied for fourth place at even-par 72 were Tim Dougherty and Mike Montgomery. In a five-way tie for sixth place at 1-over-par 73 were Terry Leach, Dennis Webb, Dennis Datchler, John Donnelly and Matthew Free. The final two to qualify without a playoff were James Duncan and Neil Cohn, who each fired a 2-over-par 74.
Ralph Costanzo won the 13th and final spot, by beating out seven other players in a sudden-death playoff. Costanzo finished 18 holes with a score of 3-over-par 75 as did Matt Vukicevich, Paul Wood, Pete Hackett, Joe Zanassi, Gerald Mraule, Larry Raber and Richard Petit. Earning first alternate was Mraule, second alternate Wood and third alternate Zanassi.
The 22nd Annual CGA Senior Amateur Championship takes place at San Gabriel CC on November 4-6.
